The Power of Giving

By Marc Astley

I have been fascinated by Channel 4’s Mutiny in which nine men set out to recreate one of the greatest feats ever: the 4000-mile trip of Captain Bligh in a tiny wooden boat after the mutiny on the Bounty.

One scene, on Vanuatua, an island in the South Pacific, caught my eye however.

It came when the Captain of the crew, ex-Special Boat Service sniper Ant Middleton, presented a Parang – a type of machete – to the leader of a tribe that had offered them shelter, and the chance to stock up on food and water along the way.

It was an offering made to recognise the hospitality Ant and his crew had received.

Paul, the tribe leader is a man who catches his fish using a spear. He is as tough as they come.

But upon receiving the gift, he was moved to tears.

That is probably because he instinctively knows that giving is, in part, a survival instinct.

Even the simple act of sharing food or shelter with another person is an example of humanity’s intrinsic generosity.

If we were an overwhelmingly selfish species, we would have gone extinct a long time ago.

Here at Astley Media we believe that (authentic) giving should be as much part of your business plan as examining the bottom line.

What are you waiting for?
